I did something today that I haven’t done in a long time, at least not on purpose. I took a project that I’ll probably lose money on. And I couldn’t be more excited or happy about it.
The best part of what I do is getting opportunities to be a part of ideas as they are born and helping them grow. On a day like today, I’m reminded how I shouldn’t lose sight of that worrying about the economics, the deadlines, the clients and all that other $#&* that bogs me down sometimes.
This project I took on today is cutting-edge, innovative and exciting. The owner tells me he wants to “change the world.” And he means it. He’s not driven by financial motives, just helping create things that make the world better, healthier and safer. I’m on board. All the way. And it just feels good.
A few years ago I gave a speech about the future of newspapers and trends in website design. There was a fascinating older man in the crowd whom I had met earlier in the conference. Richard Saul Wurman is a man of many talents – an architect, graphic designer, the guy who coined the phrase “information architecture,” and the founder of the incredible TED conferences. The kind of guy you have an instant respect for, so what he told me after my speech really stuck with me, even today. He told me “Nice job, but you focused too much on the money. It’s really just about doing good shit.”
At first I didn’t understand what he meant. But then I got it. Just do good work. Yes! How could I have forgotten that simple reason that I do what I do. It’s really just about doing good shit. I came home from that conference charged with a new perspective. I was destined to change the way I approached projects and forget about the money. Then I got the tuition bill for my kids school. Then I realized a client was two months behind in reimbursing my travel expenses. Then I realized the American Express bill was due. And suddenly, I remembered why just doing good shit wasn’t enough. But for today, even if it only lasts 24 hours, it feels good to take on an exciting project and know that all that’s going to come out of it is that it’s going to be good. Maybe even great. Maybe even world-changing.
